Denver, CO. US Autos Direct llc recieved an unpleasant phone call from their computer systems manager.
"You are missing over 250 units from inventory!" computer systems manager Jake said in a slightly panicked tone.
Chief Executive Officer Timothy Paynter was not surprised to hear the news.
"We have had serious security issues" Paynter noted. "Someone may be the new owner of a lot of stolen cars!"
Paynter says the young automobile dealership can account for many of the missing vehicles. Many were put into a new computer system but not marked sold. Others were sold through wholesale auctions and not deleted from inventory.
"Still", Paynter said, "I am sure we are missing a fair number of cars!"
Paynter said US Autos Direct, llc was founded as a volume dealership. The company added small markups and passed along great prices.
"We grew too fast", Paynter noted. "We went from selling 2 cars a month to 50 in the span of just a few months."
According to the CEO, the company was plagued with security problems since the start. It was located in a three acre industrial complex with five or six other tenants. The public had access through the lot sometimes 24 hours a day.
"We used 7 security cameras on two different hard drives." Paynter noted. "We also had a system of safes to keep client and state documents secure."
In the end, Paynter suspects the problem came from someone with intimate knowledge of the company's systems.
"According to our software engineer, our data restore points prior to Arpil of this year have been deleted."
Paynter says not to worry. The data was backed up off site and has been restored. The company is investigating further.
"We have also had a lot of our titles stolen" Paynter noted. "We are in the process of replacing titles and going through deals, deal by deal. We may shortly begin a forensic audit. We will get to the bottom of this soon."
Paynter indicated the public has nothing to fear.
"My primary goal is to protect the public we serve. The company has moved to a more secure location. The bulk of my day is spent making sure our clients have their documents and are being taken care of." he noted.
Paynter said he has been ill this past year. A heart problem left him short of breath, weak and often needing rest. He says they have no suspects at the current time.
"It could be anyone" the frustrated CEO noted. "We will know soon enough!"
